"I think this season has been about clothes that are
happy, or that make women happy," said Tome designer Ryan Lobo.
"There's a return to joy, frivolity and hopefulness on the runways."
During NYFW, we saw this enthusiasm in bold, primary-hued stripes, silver lame,
statement earrings and playful robes. Here, nine trends that ruled the runways
in the Big Apple.
Wow, did we just write that? Yes, it’s hard for us to understand,
too, but in Feb. 9, 2017 it will be 6 years since we began keeping our devoted
NYFW schedule, which in the language of fashion week is 12 seasons.
After all, we’ve been working front-and-center to bring you
the latest news about the events of the season since February 2011. Back then,
MB was still title sponsor, and Ruth Finley was still running amazing called
the fashion calendar.
Over the past years, one of the major changes in #NewYork #Fashion #Week has been that as productions have continued to branch out
confirmed dates have continued to arrive earlier and earlier. So whereas dates
and times for shows used to come scant weeks before the events themselves,
nowadays show information normally begins as early as late-November.
This season is surely no exception, as NYFW: The Shows by
IMG has already confirmed dates that begin February 9th. Also beginning
February 9th, Style Fashion Week and the Shows at FTL Moda. On Friday, Art
Hearts Fashion and Fashion Gallery New York Fashion Week will begin their sequence
of presentations, as will New York Fashion Week, The Runway’s on Fire.
Sunday, February 12th will be another “calendar newcomer,”
Bohn Jsell Collections,.
Latin-focused Uptown Fashion Week begins Tuesday, February
14th, and a parade of “street style” designers will showcase at Street Fashion
Week beginning Thursday, February 16.
Needless to say, NYFW: The Shows’ lineup is one of the majority
predictable. Likely designers will be stalwarts Nicholas K., Noon by Noor, Erin
Fetherson, Tadashi Shoji, Thakoon, Rag & Bone, Jason Wu, Calvin Klein,
Nicole Miller, Jeremy Scott, Lacoste, Jill Stuart, Taoray Wang, Christian
Siriano, Jonathan Simkhai, Victoria Beckham, The Row, Vivienne Tam, Zac Posen,
Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and many others. No word yet whether BCBG will be
back, so we can tap our usual Lubov Azria interview, but we won’t be surprised
if they decide to sit another one out.
As always, the new season will feature live-streaming runway
shows, as well as select shopping experiences, many in real time. Ability to
attend shows varies depending on whether you’re a associate of the press (i.e.,
often a blogger these days), or just someone visiting New York who wants to
attend a show and feel part of the enthusiasm. Various options are offered by
producers.
This season, we hope to see an arrival of virtual reality
experiences, which is as we all know a technology still in development. Sadly,
one of the major roadblocks to seeing extra runway shows in VR is simply an
absence of devices that can bring the experience into people’s home affordably,
and in the right way.
Either way, the good news is that hilton new york
fashion district is stronger than ever. (Did anyone really like the name
“Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York"?) Obviously there are still a few bugs to
work out. For example, currently there are so many shows on the NYFW schedule
(can we just call this “the shed,” or are that pretentious?), it can be a bit intimidating
for anybody, including us.
But here’s the simple truth new designers have the right to
be seen at New York Fashion Week. And one of the issues facing new designers is
the great cost of showing during the events. Although we don’t claim to have a
solution, we know that variety is good; which is why we continue to bring a complete
NYFW calendar for those who want to see fashion schools in new york, attend the
runway shows, interrelate with live streams, and showcase their talent at the
shows.
